János Czencz

(1885-1960)

We can find the name and the work of János Czencz from the beginning of the century in the catalogues of the larger Budapest exhibitions and in the important encyclopaedias.

He was born on 2nd September 1885 in Ostffyasszonyfa in Vas Country. He studied in the College for Fine Arts in Budapest between 1907 nad 1912, his masters were Aladár Edvi Illés, László Hegedûs and Tivadar Zempléni.

He already had an exhibition in the Artist Hall (Mûcsarnok) in 1908, and he won the Halmos Izidor Prize in the winter exhibition of the Artist Hall with his painting "In front of the mirror" in 1913. In 1918 he received the Rudits Prize for his painting the "Lying nude".

In 1920 he received the Grand Prix of the Fine Art Society for his picture "Marcella", in 1921 he got the Benkô Prize. In the internation exhibition in Fiume in 1928 he won the Medaglia Commemorativa Bronze Medallion, he was given the Balló Ede Prize in 1934. He became jury-free in 1935. As well as participating on national exhibitions he also had his own exhibitions around the country, like in Pécs (1925, 1959), Szombathely, Szekszárd (1985), Budapest (1998, 2000).

He used to live in Budapest for many years, his atelier in Százados street in Budapest, that was bombed down in the Second World War he changed for a home and atelier in Báta, where he worked and lived until his death.

He died in 1960 in Szekszárd, where his tomb is marked with the memorial statue made by the artist János Pásztor.

His paintings are kept in several Hungarian and foreign private collections as well as owned by museums, the Hungarian National Gallery has 11 works from him. His paintings can be found in the Szekszárd County Library, in the Wosinszky Mór Museum in Szekszárd, in the Liszt Ferenc Museum in Sopron, and in other institutions.
